The broker allows sending of shipments to other solar systems.

The broker is used in conjunction with trade links (i.e. wharf or airport terminal) to facilitate trade between cities. The amount of goods imported is determined by how many floors of broker are in a given city. The broker will also allow you to buy any goods from your city inventory. A broker does not export goods, but it will import everything that is produced in the system, regardless of the city's actual production needs. This can be useful in the later stages of building a new city, but in the later stages this can become a liability, as product that is needed in one city may in fact be in an another. Due to the increase in import amount per broker level, placing more broker levels at a city makes that city have a higher priority for imported goods than other connected cities.
It also allows trading with spacecraft, however, an Airport Terminal provides the same functionality, so this use of the broker is redundant.

The broker allows sending of shipments to other solar systems.

It also allows trading with spacecraft, however, an Airport Terminal provides the same functionality, so this use of the broker is redundant.

Shipments

A broker is able to send shipments to cities in other solar systems. A maximum number of shipments can be scheduled at and enroute from a broker at any one time, which is determined by the number of offices in the building blueprint used.

When at a broker, it is possible to setup and manage shipments using the City (F10) window's Broker tab.

Shipments of magmium and crystals to the Tail solar system.

Trade

Just like an Airport Terminal, a broker will also trade with spacecraft. A spacecraft may trade cargo with the broker if the ship is physically present on a connected building's site, or is near a space station in the solar system. A space station acts as a trade hub for all friendly brokers connected to an airport terminal in the solar system.

Because an airport itself provides all cargo trading functionality, a broker is redundant for this purpose.

See the Trade page for more information.

Trivia

Previously, both airports and brokers were necessary for automated commodity trading and resource imports between cities in the same solar system. The size of the broker determined how many commodities were imported every 13 minutes.

Additionally, brokers used to be the only way to trade with cities. This made them a mandatory part of every city.
