Ringworlds are ancient constructs from a civilization long past. They encircle their star in the habitable range and have multiple shade panels to provide a day and night cycle.
As A Planet
Ringworlds are comprised of up to 20 arcs. Each arc acts as a planet, having 2 resource zones, and producing an officer. Resource zone population limit is 1,000.
There are 4 sizes, determined by orbital radius. All rings are the same width however.
Ring Radius | Number of arcs |
---|---|
0.25au | 5 |
0.5au | 10 |
0.75au | 15 |
1.0au | 20 |
Rarity
Being that a ringworld can be a very powerful system to hold, they are quite rare. Here are the conditions for them.
- Habitable zone 1.0au or less
- No companion star blocking the habitable zone
- If the first 2 conditions are met, there is a 3% chance of a ringworld
Electricity
Ringworlds' unique machinery provides free Electricity to all construction and manufacture jobs, but not for Military Weapon Systems and Military Shield Generators.
Control Centers
All ringworlds have a Control Center. It is always located on arc 1 at 0°N 0°E.
The Control Center looks like a square platform with a pillar in each corner, in the middle is a tiny hologram of the ringworld.
At the Control Center it is possible to create an artificial wormhole. This in turn means the ringworld can be used as a giant Star Gate.
Hold a preon in your hand while standing near the ringworld hologram on the platform to see a hologram of the sun appear at its center, lighting the ringworld. The lighting shows the current night and day areas of the ringworld. In addition, a lit spot appears on the ringworld as a "you are here" marker. Only the avatar holding the preon sees this affect. It helps to extinguish other lights, such as your EVA suit light and vehicle lights.
Star Gate
The ringworld has the ability to create artificial wormholes to other solar systems with seemingly limitless range.
Creating these artificial wormholes requires a Preon particle from the target star. This means it isn't possible to create a connection to an unexplored system.
The Star Gate is activated simply by dropping the Preon particle on the Control Centers platform.
The Control Center will take one Preon particle from the platform every cycle. A cycle starts when all the ringworld's beam emitters (the mountains between each arc) have clear line of sight to the ringworld's star and ends when the shadow casters block the line of sight. Due to the geometry of the ringworld and position of the control center, the activation cycle corresponds with the sunset to sunrise period on the platform.
When the cycle ends, the artificial wormhole dies. This means that activating the Star Gate close to the end of a cycle will cause a very short lived wormhole.
The artificial wormhole will appear at 90°N 0°E of the ringworld's star and the exit will appear at 90°S 0°E of the destination solar system's primary star, even though the preon may have been harvested from a companion star. The wormhole created is positive and the destination wormhole is a negative wormhole, in other words it is a two-way wormhole just like normal wormholes.
This means that it is possible for spacecraft in the destination to travel through the wormhole to the ringworld system.
While the Star Gate is active, the ringworld's beam emitters will be firing beams at the ringworld's star. The ringworld's star and the destination star also changes to a darker color while it is active. The light output from each sun is reduced by half while the stargate is open, giving it that darker appearance. Farms, orchards and solar power plant production may be affected. Outer worlds could drop below the light level needed for the locals to work without electrical power.
