The avatar's mouth is positioned in a stationary pose most of the time. The mouth is animated to show when it is talking and to display emotion. After talking, the avatar's mouth returns to the last stationary pose that was current before talking.

When the player sends a message on a comm channel, a speaking animation is selected, depending on the message. When ten words or less are entered, the Talk animation is used; the Jabber animation is used when more than ten words are entered. When the message is all upper case, the Yell animation is used; the Whisper animation is used when the message is all lower case.

The avatar's current mouth pose is changed when an inanimate emote is the last or only word in the message. The avatar's mouth moves to speak the message, then it assumes the pose set by the final emote of the message. For example, the message "Hello :)" will cause your avatar's mouth to speak, then to smile. The smile will remain the current mouth pose until it changes.

Ending a message with an animated emote does not change the current mouth pose. Saying, "Hello lol" would cause your avatar's mouth to speak, then it would laugh, then it would return to the inanimate pose that was current before speaking.

An emote can be used as the first word of the message. The mouth pose enacts the emote, then it speaks the message. The current mouth pose is not changed by the emote; the mouth returns to its previous pose. For example, "Lol, that was funny." would cause the mouth to laugh for one second, then speak the message; the mouth returns to the pose that was current before laughing.

Emotes can be used in both the first and the last word of a message for a combined effect. Saying, ":'( That is terrible. D:" would cause the mouth to cry for two seconds then assume the sad pose as its new current inanimate pose. The mouth does not perform a speaking animation when starting and ending emotes are used.

Emotes embedded within a message are ignored. Only the first word and the last word are checked for emotes.

Case is insensitive when the alternate case would have the same meaning.

Asymmetrical poses are affected by the right or left handedness of the avatar. Those are perplexed, grim and sardonic. The avatar in the examples is left handed.

Mouth Poses

Animated poses indicate a time duration in seconds. Inanimate poses do not have a time duration.
