A ship yard is used to produce ships and other naval vehicles. Ship yards have to be built at the coast, having about half the building plot on water.
Vehicles produced by the factory spawn on vehicle parking spots. From there connected buildings will fetch the vehicles to fill their own parking spots.
A ship yard an underwater colony is treated as being on a coast no matter where it is. Submarine built will appear above the ship yard's harsh environment enclosure.
