Let’s table the issue of sieges for the moment.
I had already looked at the thread. Yes optimistically bombing the base in advance can work as you say, but in practice you tend to need to bomb it until the weapon bay will actually engage and destroy it. Particularly when the damned thing is invisible (as this one was) it’s not really practical to be sure you have actually unburied the thing, you just bomb it until the bay weapon decides to engage it.
