You need to research their patents. But all patents that require a patent that you don't have is hidden.

In your case you likely need grav-copling patent, which requires large rocket motor patent.

We really need a visual tech-tree view of these patents in-game.

Yes, there was one tech missing actually and that was why they did not show up. All good now.
And yes, it would be nice to have some kind of tech tree... It would make things so much easier!
