A bank is required in order for a city to collect taxes from its citizens, as well as sending tribute to the capital city.
Banks also allow an avatar to collect government debt and request loans.
If a bank is demolished or destroyed, all money held by it will be transferred to other connected buildings. If there is no connected bank, the money is lost.[1]
Bank Management
When at a bank, it is possible to loan money and manage the city's treasury using the City (F10) window's Bank tab.

Blueprint Notes
If the bank's building blueprint has a shop, it can be setup to mint cronodollars.
