The Klingon-Toucan War, which is also known as Toucan War of Independence was a short conflict between the Klingon Empire and the then freshly refounded Toucan Empire along with Stellar Syndicate and West Galactic Federation allies. It ended with the complete destruction of the Klingon Empire, with Chancellor Martok being deposed in a coup d'etat led by Avenguarde.

The Return of Toucan Empire

When on 31th January 2013 a representative of the Toucanite God-Emperor Torikhtil announced the return of the Toucans to Hazeron, the declaration was widely met with disbelief and ignored.

By January 2013 the Toucan Empire was gone almost a year from Hazeron, most of its once huge Civilization was widely believed to be decayed and the God-Emperor had left the Hazeron Galaxy forever, vowing never to return.

The only leader of the major powers that reacted to this announcement was the Chancellor of the Klingon Empire, Martok. He vowed to destroy The Toucan Empire and deal with any empire assisting the Toucans. In response to this, God-Emperor Torikthil met with Staines and a small group of West Galactic Federation members to discuss this. It was decided that in event of war Staines and the members of the WGF that were still interested would help out the Toucan Empire.

The Conflict

On February 3rd, 2013 Martok declared war on both the Stellar Syndicate and The Toucan Empire. In response to the declaration of war, DVH issued a public decree of support by the WGF to The Toucan Empire.

Faced with a potential Klingon invasion of their core worlds, the Toucan alliance quickly concluded that they had to take the initiative quickly by undertaking a preemptive-strike against Klingon systems where they suspected a large fleet gathering.

A joint strike force consisting of Toucan, West Galactic Federation and Altaran Ships was quickly assembled, and set course to the Klingon Cluster. When they arrived to the Klingon capital of New Q'onos, much to the strike forces surprise, they found only a few colonies and no ships present.

After noticing several Klingon Colonies had fallen to the combined Toucan Force, Martok surrendered all Klingon cities to random empires in a desperate attempt to disrupt the Toucan invasion. Other than irritating the invaders this action had no effect on the general course of the war. It was claimed that this action negatively affected Martok's reputation, especially among the members of The Toucan Empire.

Collapse of the Klingon Empire

The conflict largely ended when vice-emperor Avenguarde of the Klingon Empire surrendered all Klingon colonies to Terra Nova, effectively deposing Chancellor Martok in a Coup d'Etat and causing the Klingon Empire to collapse. The Klingon Empire from that day on effectively ceased to exist, with most major powers either actively supporting or staying quiet on the issue.

Analysis

Writers' note: This is written by a member of WGF-Toucan Empire. Therefore this analysis might be biased.

Casus Belli

Martok cited a chat he had with Staines as the reason for this war, while The Toucan Empire spread around that the real reason for war was that Toucan Empire rose to the #1 spot on the Empire Rankings the day before. Seeing Martok's earlier interactions with Toucan Empire, back in 2011/2012, it suggests a certain fear of the Toucan Empire. The decision to "stop the problem before it starts" and declare war quickly would seem a good choice if that fear is kept in mind. This is all speculation however, and only Martok knows the real answer to the why of this war.

Note: Lexx from Empire Rocket believes that Martok went to war with the Toucans since they previously conquered his empire, however, as above, this was speculation.

The State of the Klingon Empire

That choice, seeing the situation the Klingon Empire was in, would turn out to be a fatal one. Much of this can be attributed to Vaygr, which attacked Klingon Empire mercilessly in the month before the attack. Due to these attacks the Klingon Empire had no TL32 shipyards up and running until the day of the declaration of war. The Klingon Empire was therefore not equipped to fight a full war with the Toucan Empire, although the Toucan Empire was not equipped for such a thing either. This shows either an overestimation of Martok's own strength and/or an underestimation of the enemy's strength. Seeing as Martok fully came back the week before this war shows it's probably the former, although, again, both empires weren't ready to fight this war.

The State of the Toucan Empire

The Toucan Empire was fresh from the grave, only able to be revived with the generosity of Empire Rocket giving Toucan Empire some sectors. This meant that at the time of the DoW the Toucan Empire was unfit to fight a full-scale war. Yet the Toucan Empire had the advantage of having allies with some shipbuilding capabilities, although in the end using those abilities was never necessary. The manpower Toucan got from those allies was fairly significant, yet wouldn't have been able to tip the scales in Toucan Empire's favor until a few weeks later. While the actions of Toucan Empire's members were important in the victory over Klingon Empire, the true reason for the quick victory was with Klingon Empire's members.

Brief Period of Hostility

The reason for the quickness and decisiveness of this war was the lack of support and even revolt by basically everyone except Martok in the Klingon Empire that was still active. While the Klingons built ships to try and fend off Vaygr, with the news of this new war the members decided that it'd be best to self-destruct all the ships to prevent Martok from using them. The Toucan Empire also knew pretty much from the start of Avenguarde's coup d'etat, yet attacked in case the conspirators were lying. Without the coup, the Klingon Empire would have been more capable of fighting the war.

Conclusion

The brashness of Martok declaring war so quickly after returning, in addition to an unwilling memberbase that wanted the war to end quickly lead to an ineffective Klingon force. Had the Klingons been able to fight the war, Toucan Empire probably could have won as the war went on, although it wouldn't have be as quick or as decisive as it turned out to be.
