Free Avatars
It is now possible for an avatar to not be a member of any empire at all. There are negative consequences to this.
  • AI who are in an empire will consider you to be a threat, if you are not berthed aboard the same ship as them. AI who are not in an empire will not automatically see you as a threat; that is mainly indigenous people.
  • Banks will not do business with you.
  • You can have no command authority.
  • Governance window not available.
  • Unit orders window not available.
  • Some spacecraft windows not available.
  • Obsolete city construction window not available.
  • New city capitol, bank, police, and all military buildings not available.
  • The only berth a ship can grant you automatically is a passenger berth.
  • You cannot claim worlds.
  • You cannot capture flags.
  • You cannot capture spacecraft.
  • You have no reputation and thus no credit, since reputation in SoH is considered to be in the context of your empire.
  • You cannot buy company ships nor can you claim the title of a company ship.
  • You do not lose ownership of company ships if you leave your empire but you may not be able to command them until you rejoin some empire.
Leave Empire
The leave empire button changed to Renounce Citizenship.
  • It no longer forces you to create a new empire or join an existing empire. It just leaves your current empire and you are no longer a member of any empire.
  • You can no longer leave your empire if you owe a debt to the banks.
Immigration Policy
No methods remain for a player to join an empire without participation of a member of that empire. The only way is to use the request/join sequence while on line. That means there is no longer a need for immigration policy, join password, or join messages so those things were removed from the governance policy window.

Game Startup
Changes were made to the startup screen sequence.
  • Eliminated interfaces for creating or joining empires at startup. Now everyone starts as a free avatar, indigenous to the world on which they start. They can create or join an empire later.
  • Destroyed the avatar creation UI with extreme prejudice. I have not liked it since the day it was made. Besides being ugly, it was the only place that the dimensions of your avatar or anything were shown in feet, instead of meters, using weird little segmented number display widgets. The code was mostly generated by a graphical GUI editor and it was awful to work on. Not one bit of it remains after the slaughter.
  • New avatar creation UI is not so overwhelming. It also fixes some bugs that existed in the old one, particularly in the display of damage caused by physical and special weapons.
Create Empire
A free avatar creates a new empire by handcrafting a flag. The handcraft tooltip has a bold message to point this out. When you attempt to handcraft a flag as a free avatar, you are prompted to create a new empire instead. The interface only requires a flag image and a name. The new empire is created with you as its leader. Then you can proceed to handcraft a flag.

Teleport Invitation
You can now right-click on a message from an avatar and invite them to teleport to your location. If they accept the offer, they will teleport directly to you without their mount, vehicle, or spacecraft. Then they can recall home to get back. This should make it easier for people to get together, without having to give up their berth to berth-a-port. You cannot teleport in this way across the line between the conflict zone and the neutral zone, now depicted on the universe image in the wiki as the sigma discontinuity.

Trees Disappear
Changed some clipping code so the renderer is not so eager to clip away trees and shrubs when you look up. It bugged me to be in a jungle and look up to see clear sky.

So no mercenary type player roles? (like Firefly, commanding your lone vessel with your buddies doing business with the various factions) the only purpose of a free avatar is a free "trial" account it seems.

Hmm. If you're independent of an empire you're probably gonna be playing as pirates, and since every empire is gonna see us as hostile you might as well be allowed to capture their ships and raid their cities for supplies.

This is very interesting. Will likely have some bugs with this I am sure, so time for some fun testing!

I would kind of expect a free avatar that is part of a spacecraft's crew to maybe be treated as if they are part of the crew. Away missions with your free avatar buddy will be rather deadly.
But at the same time, who gets the blame if your free avatar buddy murders a citizen of another empire?

I fear a lot of griefing exploits will follow this, so better start brainstorming these kind of things.

Can you please convert the "join messages" into empire descriptions? And then find a way to show them on the diplomacy window.
Could just be a dossier entry we can't delete?

Teleport Invitation

I was wondering how friends were supposed to start out together until I got to the Teleport Invitation feature.
Now my only concern is that it is hard to start out as the same race/species, without the need for saving and sending the .chr file to your friend.

You renamed the button? Why?
It is way easier to understand "Leave Empire".

I am hoping there will be at some point. But this is the first step towards the possibility!

We need better "friend or foe" mechanics first, but yes again, hopefully possible in the future.

it is hard to start out as the same race

This is true. I considered it. I concluded most people want to be an individual anyway.

The .chr file is extremely tiny, only 32 bytes. It is an option.

I could add a function to request empire data including DNA at the capitol. The new startup screen never has to ask for the empire list, which saves a bunch of login bandwidth.

A free avatar can hold any berth that is granted to them. The actions of their ship are a consequence to the empire who flags the ship. Ships cannot have no empire.

Consider that a free avatar is one with no allegiance to anything. Any followers that person could have would only be a cult of personality.

It is a tiny step to make an empire, if you need more management than that. An empire could be anything from a gang to a corporation to a full fledged empire.

The purpose of the free avatar was mainly to clean up the entry screens. It was too complicated. Now you just make a dude and get into the game a lot faster.

Letting the requirement to be in an empire go was tough. It has always been there. But the startup is much more organic now. Your primitive indigenous person can actually build quite a bit before having to worry about empires.

Yeah, I remember people suggesting it, and it is a good idea. Just a lot of things that will have to be taken into consideration, since it is already super easy leave an empire and make a new one. Of course now you need a flag, but still, instant empire changing is very easy to exploit.

Yeah I noticed that, will be interesting to try that. ^^
Do buildings just belong to EVERYONE while the planet is unclaimed?

So they can't order around the crew of a ship, even if they have an officer berth?
