2016-12-10 Designer Status w/Ships

Here is a quick status report with a few pictures.

There are approximately 75k lines of new code attributed to the new designer. That's just over 1,600 pages at 45 lines per page.

Gravity Well players will likely recognize the ships, even without textures. I admit it. I imported them from .3ds files. I designed them in Blender for Gravity Well VI. I could easily make them in the new designer.

As you can see, no real texturing is done. There's just a place holder that looks like gray stuff. I will be digging in to texturing right away on Monday.

All basic geometry creation and editing functions are finished. There are adequate features to make those ship models without too much difficulty.

That first ship looks like it uses centrifugal force to mimic gravity. Will you be able to use that in rocket motor spacecraft?

Man I am excited. Also looking at the 'designer 12' screenshot, looks like it'll be possible to build The Lying Bastard :D

Speaking of texturing, see the tail end of the last discussion: viewtopic.php?f=125&t=8893&start=30#p98239

More specifically, it would be nice to have keyed "Empire Color" texture colors for ships (3 colors does sound good to me: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary). I'm assuming we will be uploading textures anyway, so people creating them can make neat looking ships with specific sections to display empire colors (like in hallways, at consoles, etc) while keeping the remaining looks of the rest of the ship.

...of course, just getting textures on them at all would be nice at this point, Im sure :)

Can't wait to be able to use it! It will be incredible seeing ships like those flying around instead of the old blocky ships.

The old ships probably won't be in very high demand once the new ones are operational. I want them to be operating in the game by the end of January.

I will post an early release of the designer when the texturing work is done. I would like to do that before Christmas.

The work on texturing is almost entirely user interfaces. Underlying support is already in place, including the shaders. It could go quickly.

Great, now I not only have to think up a new empire spacecraft design therm, but also a color therm?
Does your awesomeness ever end? Giving me so much to think about. Too many wonderful possibilities! T_T

PS: I loved the GW6 designs. ^^ But why no harvester?

I also intend to change the design publishing/sharing system a lot. Here are some rough ideas.

I will eliminate the current method of publishing designs, where you sell them at a design studio.

I want to see a user interface that lets me browse all published designs in the game. It should let me buy designs that others have published. It should also let me publish my own designs and manage them, like who can access them, price, etc.
