I am impressed you understood that, I am still having trouble understanding the opening post.
Not sure "nuking it into glass" makes sense though. Would make more sense to just change the atmosphere of a planet, either make it toxic or plain remove the whole atmosphere with a giant vacuum cleaner wielding robot maid.
Gameplay-wise I don't know if it would be fun though.
But the ability to affect the atmosphere could be interesting for some forms of terraforming. There is however issues with some resources only being available in specific atmosphere types and such.
