It should be possible to finalize ships and buildings while in preview mode, so that there is some sort of backdrop to the screenshot of the design shown on the exchange.

Doesn't preview already perform many of the finalization steps? If it were able to share that progress with any finalization started during the preview, it would be an improvement.
Typically, I run two designers, one finalizing and one previewing, so that I can check the preview without losing lots of time by doing it in series. If it turns out to be bad, I just refinalize. Any little speed improvements would be very welcome.
